Exploring the collective body and the space between us

WHY THIS SPACE

When we hear the words collective healing, we often imagine many individuals each doing their own healing, as if the collective were a sum of separate people, or something out there that we might one day help.

Collective Integration begins from a different place. Alongside our individual experience, there is a shared dimension of life that we can learn to notice: in our bodies, in our relationships and in the atmosphere of a room. In this work, we approach this as the collective body.

We may recognise it when tension fills a conversation before anyone has named it, when a silence feels familiar, or when a sense of connection changes what becomes possible between us.

This evening offers a first meeting with the work David Young has developed as the Art of Collective Integration. Through teaching, guided practice and small-group exploration, Simon will introduce ways of attending to ourselves while becoming more aware of the collective spaces we belong to.

It is also an opportunity to feel whether the one-day workshop in Dublin in January, or the four-day training, might be right for you.

WHY COLLECTIVE TRAUMA?

What a family, a community or a people could not feel at the time may continue to shape how its members live and relate. It can return in the charge that rises at the dinner table, in the tension no one names in a meeting, or in divisions that seem to replay themselves across generations.

The Art of Collective Integration approaches these experiences as something we can begin to meet together. By practising embodied presence and attending to hidden dynamics with care, we explore how greater awareness can make room for different experiences, perspectives and even distance within a relationship.

We have places to explore our personal histories, in therapy and in our closest relationships, but fewer spaces where a group can attend to what it carries together.

In Ireland, histories of famine, emigration, colonisation, loss of language and silence offer a particular place from which to explore these questions. Other peoples and communities carry their own histories, alongside their resources, resilience and ways of belonging.

WHO IS THIS SPACE DESIGNED FOR?

This evening is for:

  • Anyone who senses that their own healing is woven into something larger.

  • Therapists and somatic practitioners interested in the relationship between personal and collective experience.

  • Facilitators, teachers and leaders who encounter tension, silence or polarisation in groups.

  • People curious about how family, ancestral and cultural histories live in present relationships.

  • Those considering the January workshop or four-day training who would like to experience the approach first.

No prior experience of collective trauma work is needed. You are welcome to bring your curiosity, questions and lived experience.

What we’ll explore

The heart of the evening is learning to attune to ourselves and begin discerning between what is personal and what may be collective.

  • In one moment, we may be feeling our own life. In another, we may notice a shift as we bring our attention to a family, a community, a people or a country. Sensations, emotions and the quality of our presence can change.

Rather than following only the stories we tell about these things, we stay with the here and now and notice what actually arises as we attune.

    Together, we will explore:

    • How to notice somatic, emotional and relational changes in our experience.

    • What helps us remain connected to ourselves while attending to others.

    • How expanding our awareness to include another differs from leaving ourselves to reach them.

    • How difference and distance can be included within relationship.

    • What we notice as the shared space between us becomes more alive.

A simple question will guide the exploration:

    How does “us” feel?

Meet your Facilitators

David Young · Teacher

Teacher, Facilitator & Developer of the Art of Collective Integration

David’s work explores how we meet polarization, conflict and collective trauma within our relationships and communities. Drawing on mindfulness, systems thinking and approaches to trauma healing, he supports groups in recognising the deeper experiences that shape how we relate.

His teaching invites people to stay present with complexity, listen beneath the surface of disagreement, and discover what becomes possible when we make room for one another.

Simon Courtney

Psychotherapist, Coach & Group Facilitator

Simon is an Irish psychotherapist and coach whose work explores the relationship between our inner lives and the wider histories and communities we belong to. Alongside his private practice, he works as a mentor and facilitator within Thomas Hübl’s training programmes.

With a particular interest in Irish identity, belonging and collective healing, Simon creates spaces to explore the stories we have inherited and how they live within us today. His approach invites a deeper relationship with ourselves and one another, through presence, curiosity and honest conversation.
